It makes you think yikes and true at the same time. Another quote I like is from “the end of the world”: It’s highly quotable, but I think unlike some of Waheed’s other poems, the line breaks add meaning and tone to “if no one…”. – if no one has ever told you, your freedom is more important than their anger I really liked the following poem, which I’ve seen shared on social media before: She also makes a point of encouraging young/new writers and other women writers of color. She has a strong emotional connection to the topics she’s discussing, and it shows. Run my heart across my teeth, repeatedly.Īt moments, her talent for imagery and rhythm shine, and her voice really shows. To be fair, I read it on Kindle, which is not the best way to digest poetry like this, so it may have been an easier reading on my eyes if I read the paperback. The choppy lines hindered my reading of the poem, and at some points it was too straight-forward, and at other times, it felt like it was too purple, that I didn’t really know what she was trying to say. She has some very quotable short poems but in general I found the collection to be a bit awkward to read through. Waheed tackles some important and tough subjects like the African diaspora, motherhood, the ways in which feminism can benefit men, and sexual assault. My review of Salt by Nayyirah Waheed: Rating: 2.5 stars: “It was okay”

An earlier arrival would have done much to strengthen this uneven novel. There is much fun to the tale once the smiling, sadistic elves actually appear, befuddling the townfolk with their beauty and illusion. Only in the last third of the novel does he strike a successful balance among action, imagination and comedy. It's a tempting premise, but underdeveloped by Pratchett, who relies too heavily on his trademark humor, veering into the silly and sophomoric, to fuel the early portions of this fantasy. They've forgotten that elves are nasty creatures who live only to torture their prey-humans especially. Trouble is, almost everyone else in the kingdom of Lancre is eager to welcome the ``lords and ladies'' back. Only the three wacky witches, formidable Granny Weatherwax, crusty Nanny Ogg and scatterbrained Magrat Garlick, can ensure that the worst does not happen: the return of the elves. Part of it is because science fiction is mostly looking forward, not looking back.Īnd yet, there is one science fiction book that still is on almost every library’s shelves. Part of it is because science is always evolving, and books stay in the time they were written. Some of that is because technology has developed so quickly in the past decades, so stories that seemed cutting edge when they were written are now dated. Who doesn’t love rockets blasting off, robots saving the world, and aliens coming to Earth? And yet, there are very few classic children’s science fiction titles. He travels through burning lends (aftermath of nuclear war?) and discovers other civilisations notably Wales, and he eventually returns, having slain monsters that emerged from the disaster, to Winchester, where his brother has him arrested and orders him to put to death. Luke is prince of Winchester but his scheming brother gets him exiled. A few others remain as Christians but little is known about their god and nonviolence and their practice of it makes them a laughing-stock, no more than a side show of eccentrics to amuse people. A few, as a meritocracy, manipulate the minds of ordinary people by the use of electricity, keeping up an elaborate belief system which the people believe to be the spirits. Mechanica is a retelling of Cinderella that tells the story of a young mechanic called Nicolette. She is a very caring character that brings positivity wherever she goes. Instead of happily ever after, however, Nicolette doesn’t need romance and cares more about her friends.
